Leadership

Majors David & Dawn Worthy | Area Commanders

David and Dawn are fourth- and fifth-generation Salvationists and both are children of Salvation Army officers.  They met in college and each received their B.A. in Broadcast Communications from Asbury College in 1990 before marrying in 1991.  In 1992, David graduated from the police academy and briefly pursued a career in law enforcement.  However, in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, David and Dawn were drafted by The Salvation Army and relocated to south Florida to assist with managing the Army’s disaster recovery program in the wake of that catastrophic natural occurrence.  Following two years of service there, David became the first-ever Disaster Services Director for The Salvation Army Florida Division while Dawn served as a Program Director in the Youth Department.

David and Dawn entered the College for Officer Training in 1997 and were commissioned as Salvation Army officers in 1999.  They served for eight years in Jacksonville, Key West and Panama City, Florida.  In 2007, they were appointed as Divisional Youth Leaders for the ALM Division.  In 2009, they took on new responsibilities as Area Commander for The Salvation Army in Central Virginia and in 2014, were appointed to serve as Area Commanders for The Salvation Army in New Orleans.

In 2009, David became a graduate of Arrow Leadership’s two-year intensive emerging leader’s track which served to more fully prepare his forthcoming leadership posts.  David has served in some form of management capacity for most large-scale disaster responses since Hurricane Hugo in 1989 (including the September 11 attacks in New York City, Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti).  Dawn is a program specialist and possesses a passion for preaching God’s word.  David and Dawn have three bright lights:  Paige – 21 (who just graduated from college with a degree in psychology), Connor – 19 (a sophomore in college), and Jack – 17 (a senior in high school) and a Chihuahua named Chicago.  David is an avid motorcyclist and the Worthy’s take great delight in camping, international travel and family time together.
