Majors Howard & Mary Bratcher | Interim Area Commanders

Majors Howard and Mary Bratcher began a new leg of their Salvation Army Officership journey when they became the Interim Area Commanders for Knoxville. This is their first appointment in Tennessee.

Howard Bratcher, a second generation Salvationist was born and raised in Bowling Green, KY. He was married to Mary Chambers in 1966.

Major Mary Bratcher served on the staff of the College for Officers Training for several years where they met and were married. Major Mary Bratcher represented The Salvation Army in a conference for Girl Scouting in Norway prior to getting married.

Majors Bratcher have held various appointments in five divisions throughout the Southern Territory including Florida, Georgia, Maryland / West Virginia and Texas. Their previous appointments include: corps appointments, Area Command positions, on staff of The College for Officer’s Training (S.A. Seminary) in Atlanta, Divisional Youth Secretaries in two different Divisions, Assistant Territorial Youth Secretary at Territorial Headquarters in Atlanta, Divisional Secretary in Georgia and General Secretary/Women’s Ministries Secretary in Florida.

Major Howard Bratcher attended The Salvation Army’s International College for Officers in 1988 in London, England. Additionally, he was the Southern Territory representative in Moscow for the re-opening of The Salvation Army’s work in Russia in 1992.

The Bratcher’s retired from active service in 2003 and since then have been very active in Post Retirement Service in several places including Divisional Headquarters in Florida, Territorial Headquarters in Atlanta, Corps Officer in Salisbury, NC and now Area Commanders in Knoxville.

The Bratcher’s have two daughters, Melissa and Angela as well as two grandchildren living in Atlanta area. When they are not on Post Retirement Service they live in the Atlanta area near their family.
